Mary and Ralph

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

By Croydon J Hounslow These days, new communications technology allows us all to conduct our social affairs at the touch of a button or the click of a mouse. Text messages, email and chatrooms allow us instantaneous access to friends, acquaintances and perfect strangers across the world without ever having to speak face to face, new dating and social networking sites spring up every day, relationships and marriages are made (and broken) via these channels on an even more frequent and burgeoning basis. But all these technological and social changes are largely confined to the past fifteen or maybe twenty years. To try and gain a sense of how romance was conducted in the days before every house had even a television set, let alone a wireless internet connection, we talked to Mary Walton, 84, who married her late husband Ralph on the 14th of July 1942. They remained married until Ralph’s death from a stroke in 2000. Mary recalls vividly her first meeting with Ralph: He was this handsome young soldier, home on leave from fighting in the war. I’d known him vaguely before the war as he lived only a couple of streets away and our fathers knew one another from around the way. Anyway, it was the middle of June and I was working in Coates, the corner shop at the time. I was outside one morning, stood on the stepladder washing down the windows. As Ralph was coming past from the station, one of the old men from around the way called to him because he was a soldier in uniform, which used to mean you got an awful lot of respect from everybody at that time. So, as Ralph turned to give this chap a reply his kitbag got all tangled up in my stepladder so that when he walked on he pulled me right over! It wasn’t that far to fall as it happened, but the bucket of water went flying all over me. Oh, I was livid! Ralph picked me up and started apologising but I wasn’t having any of it, I laid right into him, calling him all sorts of names - I was quite the little madam in those days you see and here was this filthy soldier still mucky in his uniform, tipping water all over me and then manhandling me with his dirty great paws! Anyway, there I was scolding him like a fishwife in the street, getting all hot and bothered and he just started to laugh! Well, I couldn’t believe it! I thought I’d have a heart attack right there I was so cross, but that’s when I first looked at him and saw the man I fell in love with, just standing there laughing at me being cross with his little blue eyes all twinkling and his handsome smile! I just ran out of steam and stood looking up at him, and he told me that he was going home to his bath and that he’d come and meet me for closing and take me out dancing, and I couldn’t refuse, couldn’t say anything at all. We were married a month after, three days before Ralph went back to the war. You didn’t hang about in those days what with all that could get in the way, you saw a chance and you grabbed it! Fifty-eight years of marriage we had together, and I’ve never regretted a moment of it. Croydon J Hounslow works for a free singles site in the UK. Helping A Friend In An Abusive Relationship

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

By Francis Omelu I get a few letters each month from concerned friends or family members of someone involved in an abusive relationship. Some of these folks have proof, others have only suspicions. The common thread, however, is that the person in question seems to be doing nothing about the situation. Physically and emotionally abusive relationships have a complicated psychology. So your first task as a friend/relative is to stop applying logic to this inherently illogical situation. Your second is to avoid judgingdont judge the person youre trying to support, the abuser or yourself. Instead, be supportive and take responsible actions that improve the situation without making it worse. I asked my friend, Jumoke, a survivor of a 10-year abusive relationship, to share what worked when she was in that situation, what didnt, and what she wished people had done. Telling The Truth Most abuse victims arent going to come right out and tell you whats going on. In many cases, they arent even admitting it to themselves. Daniel and fear forced Jumoke to keep her situation hidden better than Solomon’s treasure. If you want to try to talk about it with your friend, start the conversation gently and make it about you, not her. Try something like, I care so much about you and Im concerned. Is everything okay? Dont press for details; this isnt an interrogation. Once she feels badgered, shell likely retreat. She may not tell you, but youve opened the door if she feels like talking later. Offering Support Jumoke told a few people when she was deciding to leave. They all vowed to be there for her, but it was promises of real help, like a place to stay or a little cash, that gave her the mettle and the means to go through with it. Only you know what youre capable of doing for a friend in need. But here are some things that can make a significant impact while still respecting your friends dignity and keeping the risk of making this situation worse pretty low: Maintain contact Make regular contact to ensure shes okay. Jumokes sister called daily at a particular time to check in. If Jumoke missed the call, her sister would wait 30 minutes and call back or drive by. If your friend doesnt have a cell phone, you can buy her one yourself. Offer safe harbor Many women feel they have no place to go on short notice. Let her know she can stay with you before she needs to. Similarly, offer to store copies of her important papers, such as police reports, a will, financial documents, etc. Provide an escape hatch Sometimes abused partners need to exit quickly. Offer to be on call to spirit your friend out of a bad situation. If Jumoke called me and said, I heard from my sister today, it meant I should meet her at the corner in 20 minutes. Give monetary support Some women literally cant afford to leave. If your friend has limited funds, offer to keep a certain amount on hand for her. Or open a joint account with her (remember to use your address, please) so she can salt away some cash in a secret stash before she leaves. Secure emotional support Some women benefit from seeing a therapist to help them get out of an abusive relationship. One of Jumokes friends alerted a therapist that Jumoke might call on short notice for an appointment. She also pre-paid for the initial visit. Get professional help Few women get good financial counsel before leaving and then suffer from the decision later. Arrange for your friend to see an accountant or financial planner to get her finances in order now. Similarly, get her a family lawyer who can clue her in on laws. In some states, the batterer can sue the wife who leaves him for abandonment or, even worse, for kidnapping if she takes the kids. A skilled attorney can minimize the chances of making a costly legal mistake. Build a network Every state has organizations designed to help women who are leaving abusive situations. Create a list for your friend that includes resources that can meet her particular needs (emergency shelters, child care facilities, financial assistance, etc.). Remember that quite a bit of time often elapses between the decision to leave and the actual departure. During this time its critical that your friend knows she isnt alone in this and that she has the freedom to get out at any time and in any way, thats right for her. Your support could, literally, be the difference between life and death. But act rationally and carefully. You dont want your actions to end up escalating the violence against your friend, or to endanger your own safety. What You Should Know Before You Press Download Ringtone

Friday, August 10th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Craig_Thornburrow]Craig Thornburrow With so many ringtones available these days, it is no wonder that some people are totally lost when it comes to understanding where to look and what procedures to follow when looking to download a ringtone. There really is not any big mystery, but there are a few common sense precautions you should take before you ever click on any download ringtone icon. Here are a few hints to help keep your sanity during your hunt for the perfect ringtone, as well as protect your cell service and equipment. The very first thing to determine is whether or not the ringtone you are considering is compatible with your cell service and your phone type. Just as it is true that there are several different types of electronic documents out there, several formats for ringtones are on the market today. Before you begin to search for a ringtone, make sure you know exactly what format will work with your setup. This one simple act can save you hours of frustration and also help to narrow the numbers of websites you will want to investigate. Second, it is important to make sure that you download any ringtone from a secure site, and one that you can trust to be free of any virus. A sad fact of our time is that far too many people end up with a computer virus that is transmitted through what seems like the most innocent download in the world. Don’t think that just because you paid a fee to join a ringtone site that you will not have a problem with a virus later on. Make sure that the ringtone file, just like any file, is checked for a virus and is clear before you complete the transaction. A third thing to consider is to have an idea of what you think you would like before you begin browsing. There are literally tens of thousands of ringtones available through the Internet these days. Without at least a general idea of what type of ringtone you might like, you can spend days sifting through all sorts of locations trying to find the right ringtone. Do yourself a favor and make yourself a list of types that would be worth listening to, and then begin to look around. Don’t feel you have to grab a ringtone from the first place you look. Bookmark any sites that have a ringtone that you really like, and write down the file name of the ringtone. This will allow you to continue looking around, but still be able to come back to any that have caught your attention. By process of elimination, you can then narrow down the list to one or two before you begin pressing download ringtone, and pretty much be assured of having at least one that you will enjoy for an extended period of time. Do You Know How To Find The Best Car Loan?

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Deanna_Mascle]Deanna Mascle People will spend months or even years planning to buy a car. They will work hard to build good credit. They will search for just the right make and model. They will scope out the various dealers and sales staff sometimes even comparing service departments too. Then they will sign on the dotted line for the first loan the sales person offers. What is wrong with this picture? It is important to remember that if you have good credit then you are a dream customer to most lenders. Even if your credit is not perfect you are still an attractive client for many lenders. Repeat this mantra whenever a lender acts as if they are doing you a favor by lending you money: I am going to give them a lot of money. Yes, you are. They can negotiate a sweet deal (sweet for them) and then turn around and sell that loan within the year and make a quick profit. Even if they don’t sell your loan they will make money off you for the next three to six years as you pay interest on your original loan. They are not giving you anything. This is a business deal and the lender stands to make a lot of money so you need to protect yourself to get the best deal you can. While most lenders tend to make you think you should be grateful to them for taking this huge risk on you, it really is the other way around. A lender can’t lose. If you honor the deal they will make a lot of money and if you don’t honor the deal then they simply take your car back and keep the interest you paid in the meantime! However there is an even bigger fallacy that lenders like to perpetuate. They don’t want you to know how desperate they are for your business. Look around and you will realize the truth of this. Check out the television, radio, and print ads that abound and you will see that lenders are getting pretty competitive. That is why you simply must shop around to find the best car loan available for you. In the end you could save yourself hundreds of dollars. Here are five ways to help you find the best deal: ~ Shop around - Get quotes from various lenders. Look at local and national lenders and don’t overlook the internet. ~ Compare terms - Interest rates vary from lender to lender but lenders offer different interest rates depending on the terms of the loan. How long will it be ? How will you make payments (electronic or check)? ~ Tweak some of the optional items that you control, such as the type of insurance you will carry. ~ Adjust your down payment - Sometimes being able to increase the percentage of what you are putting down can make a difference in the lenders terms (similarly buying a less expensive car will work the same) ~ Haggle - Yes! Lenders often act as if their rates are written in stone but this is not the case. This is where shopping around can really come in handy. If you can show that you’ve got a slightly better deal with another lender then sometimes another lender will lower their rate to beat the competitor. Hey it’s worth a try and it recently worked for me! Just remember that you are in control of your future. You can choose whether or not to accept a lender’s terms. There are a lot of lenders out there so you do not need to sign with the first offer you receive. One last hint: It might be best to go through this process before you’ve found the car of your dreams! You can get preapproved for a car loan with many lenders and that removes the pressure and worry of losing the car of your dreams while you negotiate with a lender. It also puts you in the driver’s seat when you are negotiating to buy that dream car when you finally find it if you already have a loan ready to go. Unsecured Personal Loan: No Risk, Only Gain

Monday, August 6th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Kamal_Uddin]Kamal Uddin In addition to our day-to-day expenditures, we need money for other important personal needs. These needs are not fundamental but very much necessary to keep our life functioning smoothly. Home improvement, going for holiday, buying new car, debt consolidation are the few of such needs. The specialty of these needs lie in the fact that they demand a big fund at one go. To manage a big fund at a time is next to impossible for most people. That is why people go for loans. But the presence of a galaxy of lenders and various types of loan make people confused. So you have to have clear cut idea of what kind of loan is most suitable for you. If you have no property like a home to offer as a security for a loan or if you do not want to keep your property at stake you should go for an unsecured loan. Again if you want to use your loan in whatever way you wish except for day-to-day expenditure then unsecured personal loan is the best option for you. The advantages of an Unsecured personal loan are more than one. First of all you do not require offering any collateral which saves you from a great risk. However, the lender may hike a comparatively high rate of interest. But as you are not offering any collateral and the lender is at risk this high interest rate is justifiable. Secondly, you can use an personal unsecured loans for almost any personal purpose. You can renovate your home, enjoy a holiday trip, buy a new car or consolidate your debt into one manageable loan with the help of an unsecured personal loan. Personal unsecured loan can be availed by you even if your credit record is poor. In this way personal unsecured loan gives you the opportunity to gain more by taking less risk. Surviving Graduate School - 3 Tips for Survival and Success

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

By Kristie Lorette So you’ve been accepted to graduate school and you’ve heard the rumors about how different it is from undergraduate study. You’re shaking in your boots (or flip flops, depending on where you live) and you need some good advice on how to survive the next few years of your life as a graduate student. Here are some survival guide tips to help you get through it all, from working with your graduate advisor to completing your research project. Survival Tip #1 Make the most out of your relationship with your graduate advisor. Your graduate advisor can be your lifeline to succeeding in your research and studies as a graduate student. They have already been down the road that you are traveling so they can help you make it a clean path or a really bumpy and messy path. Here are some ways that you can create a smooth and beneficial relationship with your graduate advisor: Meet on a regular basis. By having a scheduled meeting with your graduate advisor on a regular basis it will help to keep you on track. You are more apt to make progress on your research and project efforts if you know you have a certain time that you have to complete it before you have to report your progress to your advisor. Be prepared and organized. Prepare the night before for your meeting with your advisor. Create an agenda or list of items that you need to discuss with him or her. Gather all of the materials, notes or completed projects that you need to show your advisor and place everything in the order that you need to go through it at the meeting. This will give you the appearance of being organized and prepared, which you will be. Follow-up. Follow-up each meeting with your advisor be sending him or her an email. Reiterate everything that was discussed and covered in your meeting in the email. This will create a written record of your meetings and will help to ensure that you and your advisor are on the same page as you progress through your research and projects. Be proactive. This is your education, not your advisors. While they are there to mentor you and to help you succeed, they are just as busy as you are. You need to be proactive in contacting and keeping in touch with your advisor. Survival Tip #2 Find a thesis topic and formulate a research plan. Pick a topic that is interesting to you and that will hold your interest throughout the entire process. This will help you to stay motivated. Pick a topic that your advisor also finds interesting. Your advisor will be more motivated to help you with your research and to help you make progress on your research topic if they think that the project is worth devoting their time to. Pick a topic that is interesting to the research community in order to make yourself more marketable. Make sure that topic addresses a real-world problem. Pick a topic that is narrow enough to be completed in the timeframe that you have been allotted to complete the project. Be realistic. You should expect to complete your research and earn a good grade as an accomplishment. Don’t necessarily expect to receive the Nobel Prize. Survival Tip #3 Make continuous progress on your research. Have a master plan. Keep a master calendar that includes all drop-dead deadlines. Identify key tasks that need to be completed by certain dates. Go over your deadlines and key task schedule with your advisor to make sure that you are on the right track. Make to-do lists. Once you have your master calendar created, you will need to make to-do lists of tasks that you need to accomplish each day in order to meet your deadlines. Being able to check off completed tasks will mentally make you feel like you are making progress on your research project. Notebook and pen. Also have a small notebook and pen with you to jot down ideas that pop into your head. You never know where you’ll be when a thought comes to mind. Discuss your research with others. Your fellow students, friends, and family may have very useful insights for you on your topic. They may be able to provide you with a fresh perspective since they are not engrossed in the project like you are on a daily basis. Don’t get distracted. You have to focus on your research and set a certain amount of time a day aside just for research. It is easy to be distracted by everything in the world around us, but you must avoid things that will distract you when you should be doing your research and working on your project. By following the advice that these survival tips provide you, you will be sure to survive graduate school. Being organized, prepared and focused are traits that you will need for real-world situations long after you leave graduate school. So while these skills will help you survive graduate school, they really go beyond that and help you to survive life. Kristie Lorette is a frequent contributor to CareersandEducation.com. Muddler Minnow-A Fly Fisher’s Fly

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

By Stanley Stanton If I had to pick only one fly I could only fish with all year long, I would have to choose the Muddler Minnow. I like this fly pattern because it is so versatile, and it seems to produce on big rivers, small streams, and lakes. Popular sizes ranges from size 4 down to size 10 and it doesnt have to be tied perfect to be effective. In fact, I have a friend of mine who once told me that the worse it looks, the more fish it catches. So if you are tying your own Muddlers and they dont look that good, do not worry they may still catch fish. The Muddler Minnow is a great fly for Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Brook Trout, Steelhead, and most other game fish. This fly has two major things going for it. First, it looks like a wide variety of fish forage. For example, to the fish, a large Muddler may look like a grasshopper, big stonefly, or even a small field mouse. The smaller Muddlers may look like caddis flies, small minnows, or small sculpins. Second, it can be fished just about any way you want using a dry line or a wet line, dead drifted on the surface, down and across the current, or cast and striping the fly. Dont be afraid to give the Muddler some action. Make it look like alive trying to get away from a predator, or make it look like a big fly trying to get off the surface of the water. A Muddler Minnow fishing tip that works when fishing slower currents or lake fishing: Cast out to a spot. As soon as the fly hits the water, twitch the fly a couple of times while stripping in about 2 feet of line, and then let it sit for 5 seconds, then twitch and strip in again working the fly back to you. Make another cast to a different spot about 6 feet from the first spot. Try not to fish over the same place over and over. Just as there are endless variations of the Muddler Minnow, there are just as many ways to fish the Muddler. For example, in the summer, you can fish it like a hopper; twitch and pause making it look like a big insect has just fallen in the water. Skate the Muddler, and make it wake across the current while at the same time giving the fly the action of an injured minnow trying to escape a charging predator. In the springtime try the smaller sizes, and fish the fly with a sinking tip line close to shore, giving it a short stripping action. During early mornings and late evening of summer and fall use the larger sizes of the Muddler, giving it action along the edges of deep pools and cut banks. Please remember to be careful while you are on the river, do not harm our wonderful land, dont litter, and please practice catch and release for the next generation. Truth About Christ - Three Components of Christ

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

By Sustines Laplana Did you know that Christ has three component as a being? Man is composed of three components: Body, Soul and Spirit according to Apostle Paul.23May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (I Thesalonians 5:23, NIV)And because Christ is truly a man, he has these too. Christ has body.52Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus body. 53Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. (Luke 23:52-53, ibid)He has spirit too.46Jesus called out with a loud voice, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit. When he had said this, he breathed his last. (Luke 23:46, ibid)And lastly, he has soul too.27 Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? Father, save Me from this hour? But for this purpose I came to this hour. (john 12:27, NKJV)I just want to make it clear that the spirit that Christ surrendered to the Father is not the spirit that most of us are thinking. This is because there are people, especially those who are Catholics believe that the spirit surrendered by Christ to the Father is the so-called-by-catholic SOUL. Soul is different from Spirit and Spirit is not the Soul Why did Christ surrendered his spirit to the Father? The answer is, because Christ is truly man. Man when dies, the spirit will return to God, because it is God who gave it.7 Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to God who gave it.
