There are many factors that must reach equilibrium in order to have a healthy environment and to have a beautiful water garden. Otherwise you may wind up killing any fish you include and having a sick, algae overgrown mess that is neither attractive nor does much for your gardening efforts. In this article we are sharing some basic water garden pond care tips that you probably have seen before if you have done any reading about water gardens. Understand these tips go toward achieving a beautiful water garden pond by balancing your water garden plants, the fish you may wish to include, the bacteria that also play an important part and other items. First off be sure to dechlorinate your water that you include in the pond. This is especially important if you include fish and other creatures. Either allow the water, once your pond is built, to sit for a few weeks or use some type of dechlorination kit to achieve your end. However you may find your city water supplies have been treated with chloramine. Chloramine can remain in the water for months and you should use a chloramine remover. Keeping it above 7 and in the 7 to 10 range will help keep the algae down in the pond. Realize when your pond is just starting you do need to give some time for the algae to come into balance and you may have a heavy algae bloom for the first two to six weeks. As long as the pH is as above, this should clear up. You can add submerged plants that will help remove the nutrients the algae uses and help filter the water. You can actually think of algae as a sign of how well you have maintained the balance within your water garden pond after the first few weeks. Too much floating on top and you have a problem. Once you begin to add fish and plants to the pond, the first rule is “Don’t crowd”. You can always add more later on if it appears you have the room. Fish will grow and so will the plants. You will get a lush appearance eventually but trying to force it right away can cause diseases among your fish and perhaps even encourage too much algae growth. Fact is you will want to be sure that you do not completely cover over the surface of the water garden pond even later. At least one third of the water surface should be clear. This allows the sun to penetrate and reach any submerged plants you have added to your pond. It also allows gases to escape and oxygen to enter the water. This all goes toward achieving that mini-ecosystem balance. Lastly, don’t be in a rush to get your plants and fish into the pond. It would be best to give your water garden pond time to settle in and mellow. Add plants next and give them time to come into balance. Adding fish should best be done in late spring or early summer when the temperature of the pond reaches 50 degrees. By Teow Aun Chew Sutra is also known as stanza. Hui Neng spoke about Sudden Enlightenment where it takes only a moment to attain Buddhahood. In one of his discourses he told his disciples that he had a Formless stanza to recite and advised both laity and monks to put into practice. This is his stanza: A master of the Buddhist Canon as well as of the teaching of the Dhyana School may be likened unto the blazing sun sitting high in his meridian tower. Such a man would teach nothing but the Dharma for realizing the Essence of the Mind. And his object in coming to this world would be to vanquish the heretical sects. We can hardly classify the Dharma into Sudden and Gradual but some men will attain enlightenment much quicker than others. For example, this system for realizing the Essence of the Mind is above the comprehension of the ignorant. We may explain it in ten thousand ways but all those explanations may be traced back to one principle. To illuminate our gloomy tabernacle, which is stained by defilement, we should constantly set up the Light of Wisdom. Erroneous views keep us in defilement while right views remove us from it. But when we are in a position to discard both of them, we are then absolutely pure. Bodhi is immanent in our Essence of Mind and attempt to look for it elsewhere is erroneous. Within our impure mind the pure one is to be found and once our mind is set right, we are free from three kinds of beclouding (defilement, evil karma and expiation in evil realms of existence). If we are treading the Path of Enlightenment, we need not be worried by stumbling-blocks. Provided we keep a constant eye on our own faults, we cannot go astray from the right path. Since every species of life has its own way of salvation, they will not interfere with or be antagonistic to one another. But if we leave our own path and seek some other way of salvation, we shall not find it, and though we plod on till death overtakes us. We shall find only penitence in the end. If you wish to find the true way, right action will lead you to it directly; but if you do not strive for Buddhahood, you will grope in the dark and never find it. He who treads the path in earnest, sees not the mistakes of the world. If we find faults with others, we ourselves are also in the wrong. When other people are in the wrong, we should ignore it, for it is wrong for us to find faults. By getting rid of the habit of fault-finding, we cut off a source of defilement. When neither hatred nor love disturbs our mind, serenely we sleep. Those who intend to be teachers of others should themselves be skilled in the various expedients which lead others to enlightenment. When the disciple is free from all doubts, it indicates that his Essence of Mind has been found. The Kingdom of Buddha is in this world, within which enlightenment is to be sought. To seek enlightenment by separating from this world is as absurd as to search for a rabbits horn. Right views are called transcendental; erroneous views are called worldly. When all views, right or erroneous, are discarded, then the essence of Bodhi appears. This stanza is for the Sudden School. It is also called the Big Ship of Dharma. Kalpa after kalpa, a man may be under delusion, but once enlightened it takes him only a moment to attain Buddhahood. According to Tao of Heaven, Hui Neng is the incarnation of Bodhisattva Ti-Tsang (the Deliverer from Hell). He was born in Canton and two days after he was born, two monks came to his home and said: Your son has great affinity with Buddha; therefore we come to give him a name. Hui means in the future he will be able to use wisdom of Buddhist teachings to help the mortals; Neng means he will be able to illuminate the Dharma of the Buddha. Hui Nengs father died when he was only three and his childhood was poor and difficult. When he was twenty-four, while delivering a batch of fire wood to a store, he heard a guest reciting the Diamond Sutra, he was enlightened. He asked the guest where he obtained the sutra and the guest told him from a temple in Huang Mei. The guest with generosity gave him ten ounces so that he will be able to leave for Huang Mei to pay the fifth Patriarch a visit and be his disciple. Even though he did not become a monk under the fifth Patriarch Hong Yen at that time, with his true wisdom, he was chosen to become the sixth Patriarch to carry on the lineage of Tao. This is the Sutra of Hui Neng on Prajna (wisdom): In the future, if an initiate of my dharma should make a vow in company with his fellow disciples to devote his whole life without retrogression to the practice of the teaching of this Sudden dharma, in the same spirit and dedication as that for serving Buddha, he would reach without failure the Path of Holiness. But this righteous person must be transmitted confidentially from heart to heart the instruction handed down from the past Patriarchs; and yet no attempt should be made to conceal this method of immediacy. The Sudden dharma is the sudden awakening taught in Tao of Heaven as the Three Heavenly Treasures. The First Treasure is to wake up our divine soul or true self and plant the seed of enlightenment. Hui Neng also said that: Sentient being who sows the seeds of enlightenment, in the field of causation will reap the fruit of Buddhahood. By Russ Reina As each year went by, and the family became a bit more splintered, I witnessed much loss of tradition. At my first Sundance all of the family members worked in unison–as I had witnessed in the Yuwipi Ceremonies–to get the specifics down as they had been passed on to them. Each successive Sundance–as Godfrey was unable to be present and took Unci with him, and then Phillip was killed in a car crash–seemed to have lost so many of the details that I had once thought were essential. Without many voices to guide me in the part that I was called on to play, I found myself learning to focus my intent on others, open my heart, and beckon the Spirit of Woptura to be present, even if I didn’t have the words and had lost many of the details of the Sundance itself. Spirit never ceased to appear at Sundance. It never ceased to affect the people. Regardless of the traditions and subtleties lost. The miracles never stopped. One individual came to dance with infected abscesses on his feet. His foot was turning black, over-the-borderline gangrenous. I lobbied long and hard for him to go to the hospital in Rapid City. He ignored me. He prayed hard and was able to walk by Tree Day, and then went on to complete the Dance, during which time his foot completely healed. Im talking no scars! There was something going on there that seemed to go beyond the words, the songs, the nuts and bolts of the rituals; as if just knowing the essence of the Spirit he was calling in was enough. It wasn’t that particular Sundance that cured him, it was his intent to dance “so that the people may live,” strengthened by the intent of the others around him for the same thing. Not too long after my last Sundance on Pine Ridge, and shortly after Unci blessed my Cannunpa — a pipe I had taken a year to make myself as I was instructed — I started doing prayer circles. I was full of myself. Impressed by my own knowledge, there was an element that I soon had to come to terms with that was living inside of me. I wanted those people involved with me to know and experience how adept I was with what I was taught by the family. I came to recognize that my intent was geared toward making me look good. I began by using some prayers in Lakota that I had learned in the Yuwipi Ceremony. In one of them, I called on Inktomi (Ick-tomi), the Spider. Big mistake! What followed was four days of what some would call psycho-kinetic phenomena: objects around me would spontaneously break, I experienced raindrops in sealed rooms, fire alarms would go off around me for no reason, even a computer started to spew out messages on its screen that were absolutely hauntingly specific to the people I was with; mean-spirited, isolated sentences dredged out from some deeply buried memory banks that supposedly had been erased by the prior owner. And those were just the outer phenomena! At the same time, I was completely drunk with a feeling of power. But the cost was astronomical. I felt an uncomfortable presence about me, sometimes trying to get in me and stay. I literally felt hounded by the Spirits, as if the emotions of specific personalities would pass through me. I would suddenly find myself collapsing in abject fear, hilarious laughter, or hopeless tears, knowing full well, it had nothing to do with what I, myself, was experiencing in the moment. I had crossed over into a lineage of spirits I really knew nothing about. My world had gone berserk. Nothing I had ever experienced in my life remotely resembled this. To be honest, I didn’t even believe that such things happened. I contacted the family, now back at Pine Ridge, and was told that Inktomi was only to be called upon by an experienced Wicasa Wakan (wi-cha-sha wa-con), Holy Man, for its medicine is so strong and unruly that only a person so trained and pure could handle it. It is Inktomi that is called upon during Yuwipi Ceremonies. I was in way over my head. My only recourse was to return to the Cannunpa, even though I was scared to death of it. I prayed with it for help to undo what I had done. I did so more humbly than I had approached anything in my life. More than anything else, I was in fear that the people with whom I had done ceremony had been harmed. I had no idea what I had unleashed and upon whom. In the final analysis, I had taken the incredible gifts I was offered by the family casually. For every action there is a reaction, and this white man had taken what was not his out of the context of its caretakers and tried to do with it what they do with it. No, it simply doesn’t work that way, and the balance is struck within the context of the traditions that are violated, NOT in terms or experiences that make sense to the interloper. After four days of parayer, the phenomena ceased. I came to realize that even separate from what I knew, separate from what I understood; there was a distinct Spirit that I called on that manifested in ways I could never have imagined. I had done things in a certain way and certain things had happened! What I had also done was misuse my intent within the context of a Sacred Ceremony. I laid down my Cannunpa for years, and only picked it up again when I was willing to stake all I am and all I own on use of it for others, not myself. Because Advertising Agencies have no answer to the problem of advertising’s increasing ineffectiveness, the solution now is an increasing stampede to any new destination, like mobile phones where the greatest risk lies for a new avalanche of commercial content. Whilst all this is taking place a big assault on television is underway, by, for example Google. And all of this adds up toyou’ve got it, more and more clutter.
