These gourmet coffee drinks entered the market place in the mid-1990’s and have steadily been increasing in popularity ever since. They consist of espresso-based drinks such as lattes, espressos, caf mochas, cappuccinos, and iced coffees. Just hearing the names tempts your taste buds. Seeing the coffee shops on every corner and often in your workplace makes it more convenient than eating breakfast. The sizes vary from 10 to 32 ounces and are often prepared with milk, cream, hydrogenated oils, fats, added sugars, and syrups in addition to the coffee making them much higher in calories than you might expect. How is the advent of gourmet coffee affecting weight? A recent study analyzed the gourmet coffee consumption of 165 women attending Simmons College in Boston, MA. The researchers found that the gourmet coffee drinkers had a 206 calorie increase in a typical day and a 32 gram higher sugar intake than the non-gourmet coffee drinkers. This kind of calorie increase can lead to a gradual weight gain over time averaging about 20 pounds per year. Plus the sugar consumption can lead to blood sugar surges that can cause the body to store more calories as fat. To top that off, the sugar and caffeine combination can end up stimulating your appetite leading to even more calories consumed during a typical day. Wonder how many calories and sugar grams are in your favorite drinks? Here is a list to give you an idea. Oh, and just for reference, 250 extra calories per day will lead to a pound weight increase each week or around 24 pound weight increase in a year. The recommendation for sugar consumption is 12 teaspoons or less per day. The days of just eating meat and cheese were a quick and unhealthy idea for weight loss, this is why. Red meat and cheese have a lot of saturated fat and cholesteral. This is what I call “heart stoppers”. You will lose weight, though. The reason you lose weight, even with bad fats, is you put your body into a state of ketosis. This state is where your body looks for carbs and sugars to burn first. When it doesn’t find them it will attack your fat in deperation causing quick fat burn. The problem is you are only feeding you body atery clogging food. Good fats like omega 3 and monounsaturate fats will give your body the energy it needs and not clog up your ateries. These good fats are found in fish, nuts, and olive oils. I list them because they are equally low in carbs. This will cause your body to burn fat. The next type of food you need is the high protiens to feed your growing muscles. Great high protein meals include tuna, chicken, nuts and eggs. I also choose to list these foods specifically because they are low in fat and huge in protien. Now, can most of us only eat these foods? The answer is no. The key is to include them with some of your favorite low carb foods. They will help fill the gaps that some low carb foods don’t fill. You have to eat the cheese and red meat if you want it. Unhappy people will relapse. Its almost a fact. It has to be fun and rewarding. Set a day of the week where you have some ice cream. Grab a slice of pizza. The key is to stay on track and stay happy. Take a friend to the gym. Research new low carb recipies. Get into it! The most important thing is that you slightly alter your schedule and move on with your activities. This is a fourfold increase on statistics from 10 years ago and the amount of tea houses/shops also replicates this trend. They have grown from 200 in the early 1990s to 2000 in 2005, with no sign of the trend slowing down. The reasons are two fold, firstly that tea is seen as the more health conscious option when compared to coffee, and tea can be infused with other, more subtle flavours that coffee would not tolerate. If you have some talent with words, why not take a few moments and try your hand at writing a poem for your lover? Just sit down and list all the reasons why you think they’re special. Then put those thoughts into some kind of free verse format: a column of lines, roughly the same length, which may rhyme but don’t need to. Take some time to read over what you’ve written and you’ll get a few ideas on how to improve a line or phrase. The point is to express your feelings as honestly and clearly as possible. Simplicity is the key. And if you’re really motivated, you can spend half an hour of prep time reading some classical romantic poems to get your brain into that ‘groove’. Even if your poem won’t win any literary prizes, the person you present it to will most likely treasure it as if it were composed by one of the great Romantic poets. I’d like to share a story of the first time I received a love poem. When I was twelve years old I had a crush on Robert, the new boy in my class at school, and he had very generously decided that I was “cute”. I was so incensed by this betrayal that I lunged at him and chased him down the street. He swerved into the gutter and I bolted after him just as the bus pulled in. It hit me from behind and I went down. The bus then ran over my right foot. A short time later, the ambulance arrived and the paramedic driver examined me. He decided that I didn’t need hospitalization so he drove me home with instructions to spend the next six weeks in bed. Meanwhile, a distraught Robert was blaming himself for the accident. He asked the other children at the bus stop where I lived, then walked the two miles to my house. Then he sat across the street on the pavement, wondering if my father would strangle him if he knocked at the front door. A couple of hours later he worked up the courage to confront my father, which turned out to be something of an anti-climax because my father had no idea about Robert’s part in the drama. Robert tiptoed into my room and handed me a sheet of paper; he had written a poem for me as he sat across the street from my house. I remember how thrilled I was that someone would do such a thing. It was like something out of a novel or a movie. I kept that poem, which ran to one and a half legal pages, for a number of years, until it disappeared when we moved house a decade later. But I still remember the first four lines: Her name is MargueriteI very much like that girlShe means much more to meThan any gem or pearl That was a lifetime ago and yet those words remain in my memory. As for the boy himself, by the time I got back to school Robert had moved on to greener pastures (he now liked my best friend’s new best friend). But that hardly mattered as I was now a minor celebrity because I got hit by a bus while chasing a boy. The nuns had a field day praying for my soul, which was not the last time they’d engage in that futile exercise. My right foot is still a little flatter than my left but it was worth it for the notoriety. And hey, Robert, wherever you are, thanks for the memory. Find an existing poem that best expresses how you feel and present it to your lover inside a greeting card or gift. Or have it framed and present it with a bouquet of flowers. Why Most Diets Don’t Work

By Nathan Latvitis Ever thought of, known someone, or gone on a diet? You probably have. The word diet seems like a common word for someone who is unsatisfied with their current physical condition. The problem is that most diets usually end up failingin the long run. Going on a diet usually refers to eating alot less food, in the hope that it will make us lose those unwanted pounds of fat. Although there are different types of diets, 90% of them stress a strong reduction in calories one way or another. Everyone has a certain amount of calories that they require per day to keep themselves alive and to perform bodily processes. This requirement of calories is known as Resting Metabolic Rate or RMR for short. For the purpose of this article, we will use my body as an example. My RMR is about 2500 calories/day. I will eat about 2500 calories to just keep myself alive. Note: You can calculate your RMR at http://www.weight-loss-resources.com/calculators/rmr.html On another note, our bodies adapt to the stimuli that they are exposed to. For instance, when one lifts weights their body adapts by growing muscle, when one runs long distances their bodies adapt by building more capillaries to enhance blood flow, when one is exposed to cold temperatures their body begins to shiver in an attempt to create heat through muscle contractions, etc. The point is our bodies adapt to essentially everything that they are exposed to, including how many calories we eat per day. So, when our bodies are exposed to a calorie deficit (a lower number of calories than our RMR) they must adapt. Lets say that I want to go on a diet and I begin to eat 1000 calories a day instead of the normal 2500 (Actually, I eat more than 2500 calories because I exercise and perform daily activities. 2500 only accounts for the calories needed to keep my body alive. Although for the sake of simplicity, we are only using the RMR. If the message within these parentheses confused you, simply ignore it.) One of the first ways my body is going to adapt is by using up my fat stores to make up for the lack of calories. This is why most diets seem to work in the beginning. The thing is, the body does not want to keep using its precious fat stores for energy. The human body does not see fat as a bad thing; it is a backup mechanism for when a calorie deficit is introduced. Now heres the kicker. Since my body is not going to want to keep using up its fat stores, it is going to adapt by lowering how many calories my body needs per day to keep itself running (RMR). One of the main ways it accomplishes this is by eating away at its own muscle. Instead of requiring 2500 calories a day to keep my body running, my body will eventually adapt over a period of time and only require 1000 calories to keep running. Back when our ancestors lived they needed this calorie adaptation to survive when food was short and they were starving. The trouble is, the body cannot tell the difference between starvation and dieting. Now that my bodys RMR has adjusted to the new number of calories that Im are eating, it no longer needs to use its emergency fat stores to keep itself alive. This is when your fat loss stops from a diet. In addition to this, if I decide that I want to go off of my 1000 calories a day diet and begin to eat 2500 calories a day again then there is a calorie surplus. The body does not need these extra calories so it will store them as fat. The exception to storing them as fat is when the body needs to build muscle because it has been exposed to some type of exercise or weight lifting, and even then all of the calories are not used for muscle growth. Now that I have changed my RMR to 1000 calories per day, I have really wrecked my metabolism and its going to be harder to get to my goal of actually losing fat. That is, unless of course If I want to stay on my diet forever. So what is the best way to lose fat without messing up my metabolism (RMR)? A calorie deficit is required to lose weight, but eating less is not the only way to create a calorie deficit. Another safer way is to exercise.
