Fountain Pen History

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

By Eddie Tobey The urge to write and draw can be dated back to the early ages of human civilization. Caves discovered by archeologists are proof of the attempts of the primitive men to draw and write. From engraving on stone plates and cave walls to writing on palm leaves and hieroglyph inscriptions, mankind has been trying to preserve its thoughts using various implements: sharp stones, reeds, metals and quills. The invention of ink and paper changed the mode of writing by scratching. Quills were dipped in a reservoir of ink and used for writing. Holding a thin quill didnt suit to writing for long hours. It struck the early inventors that the hollow channel in a birds feather can store ink for writing. The fountain pen in its raw form was born. The first mention of fountain pen can be traced to the Egyptians. Hassan El Basha Mamoud an Egyptian scholar translated a manuscript from Fatimid dynasty dating to 969 AD, which talks about using a pen without an inkpot. A pen was made of gold and presented before the caliph. It had its own ink reservoir. But the pen leaked, and hence a better one was ordered. The same pen with modifications was presented. This time, there was no ink spill when the pen was tilted to all sides. The pen wrote fluidly on contact with paper, and ink disappeared as soon as the pen was lifted from the surface of paper to the amazement of the onlookers. Except for the writing on the manuscript, there was no other evidence that such a writing implement was ever used. The earliest fountain pen was designed by M. Bion, a Frenchman, in 1702. There were many producers of fountain pens in the early 1800s. John Scheffer, a Britishman, mass-produced fountain pens that were half quill and half metal. The ink was stored in sheeps gut. But all such early attempts at holding ink in hard rubber tubes with a metal nib at the bottom were messy. Necessity is the mother of invention, and its wonderful how path breaking inventions are made. Lewis Waterman, the inventor of the fountain pen used widely, determined to do something after a valuable contract document was destroyed by spilling ink from the pen he usedan insurance salesman turned into an inventor. Waterman patented the fountain pen in 1884, and started mass-producing it. The fountain pen in its true form was born. Benefits Of Vinyl Truck Graphics - Message On A Truck

Friday, March 7th, 2008

By Syed Raheem The growing interest in vehicle wrap advertising and the positive mass response to car graphics has allowed the vehicle wrap industry to mature. What started with decals and stickers on cars and motorcycles has evolved to larger mobile media, like trucks and buses. Thus, if a business owner feels that simply wrapping a car with vinyl graphics is not blatant enough, he or she can bring his or her ads to the next level by getting into truck wrapping. Reaching A Bigger Audience With A Bigger Ad Because everyone always seems to be rushing off to somewhere, simply going along with the host of car wrap advertisers will not make you stand out. How do you get your message out loud and clear then? You literally rise above the rest. That is, by placing your vinyl ad graphics on trucks, which are larger and higher media. Imagine being stuck in traffic. If you’re going bumper to bumper with other cars, it is not likely that you will notice the ad graphics wrapped around vehicles of the same size as yours. However, when a bus or truck wrapped in colorful ads pass you bay, you will definitely take a second look. A Growing Industry The truck wrapping industry is fast rising. The more blatant the vehicle graphics, the better. Because trucks offer a wider space to place information, marketers find that this is a more practical and cost-effective way to reach their target consumers. In fact, according to a study by the Association of Mobile Advertising, brand awareness tends to increase by as much as 31% to 70% if they are advertised in the form of vehicle wraps. And though vehicle wrap costs between $2000 to $4000, the fact that it can last for 3 to 10 years makes it a very good investment. It will not be surprise if we see all trucks and buses carrying different vinyl graphic ads in a few years. The world is not likely to slow down in the coming years. Our activities are expected to pick up speed. Thus, the best way for marketers to reach us is find a way to keep pace. Car wrap is an effective method, but truck or bus wrapping is more in-your-face. 7 Tips To End Night Time Eating

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

By Kathryn Martyn, M.NLP You Can Stop Being Influenced by Food Ads There is much in the news today about obesity and you can be assured that the food industry fully intends to place the blame squarely on the individual, despite the fact they spend hundreds of millions of dollars every year in an effort to entice us to buy more and more of their products. Children are especially vulnerable to the advertising for cereals, snack bars, crackers, cookies, candy, and fast foods. Colorful packaging, and now even colorful foods to encourage the little shoppers to badger their parents into buying the “convenient” snack packs for them. “Mommy I want it” is exactly the result advertisers are paying to obtain. They know that many adults will give in to the child’s demands, just to “keep the peace.” If you live in modern society, you can’t escape advertising. How many times have you been happily minding your own business when suddenly the TV screen flashes a big, juicy, something! Your stomach may start gurgling, your mouth starts watering, and the launch sequence for hunger has begun. Once the countdown starts, nothing can stop the launch into the kitchen, or for the seriously dedicated, out the door to go get something to eat. This can happen only an hour after a big dinner. The ads are designed to do this, and they work well as we prove with our food dollars every day. Count the Food Ads Next time you watch TV keep a note pad nearby and make a little hash mark every time you see a commercial that encourages you to eat. You’ll also notice there are certain ads that seem to trigger the hunger response more than others. What is it about those ads? Do you start to mentally taste the food? Does it remind you of happy occasions? It can even remind you of unhappy occasions which then drives you to want something to eat because you “deserve” it. Notice whether it is the people in the ad, the message itself, the words they use, even the background music or scenery? See if you can pin-point what, exactly, it is about the ad that draws you in. Notice what you don’t like about ads that simply do not interest you. Play college student and do this as homework, and if you can get your kids to do it with you, all the better. My son has come to me many times to tell me about something he’s seen on TV and now wants me to buy. He gets caught up in the half hour infomercials and becomes so convinced their product is the single best thing, that it’s difficult to change his mind. Evenings are an especially rough time for dieters because of the over abundance of advertising for food. Seeing delicious things to eat can create the sensation of hunger until it becomes a patterned response. Turning on the TV then begins to make you hungry, even without the food cues. 7 Ways to Combat Evening Snacking Habit 1. Mute the commercials or switch to another channel (channel surfers already do this anyway). Not watching or hearing the ad can help enormously. Remember, out of sight, out of mind. 2. Use commercial break time to do housework. You’d be amazed at how much clutter you can clear in three or four minutes, and every hour you get at least four of these breaks. 3. Mute the ads and keep your hands busy until your show comes back on with a project like knitting, reading or finishing that book you’ve been writing. 4. Start a new business (then you’re probably not in front of the TV anyway). 5. Step outside and breath some fresh air for a few minutes. 6. Exercise during the ads. Stand up, sit down, stand up, sit down, do this for a full minute. It’s a great leg exercise. Use a kitchen chair rather than the couch to be kinder on your knees. 7. Move to another seat in the room. Sometimes just getting up from your usual spot in the room (the coach, or your favorite chair) and moving to another location can help, so can getting a glass of water. Sometimes it’s thirst. Be Willing to Experiment and You can Overcome the Allure of the Food Ads The worst thing you can do is simply watch and then attempt to combat your growing desire to eat. Once the idea that you’re hungry is planted, it becomes much more difficult to change your mind. Instead stop the idea from occurring in the first place by finding something else to do instead of watching another Burger King commercial. Advertising only works when we’re paying attention, either watching or listening. I’ve no quarrel with advertisers, I advertise my services too, but watching one hundred ads all featuring food after dinnertime is a bit much for anyone to endure. Food ads are designed for you to simply sit and be mesmerized by the flashing words, snappy slogans, colors and lights. Pay closer attention, or pay none at all, but either way you’ll gain a much greater understanding of how advertising influences you. Stage 3 - The Worst Part Of A Relationship - Disillusion (B)

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

By Elaine Sihera The most noticeable thing at the start of this torrid stage is that the glasses have lost their rosy hue and are now crystal clear, with extra zoom lens added to focus on every tiny detail as the differences in each partner become magnified and appear far less attractive. At times you seem to have so little in common, everything the other person does is wrong. Little irritations which were cute before are suddenly yuck now and you wonder how you fancied her in the first place! You begin to notice that he is untidy while he notices that youre very stubborn. There is some pulling away from each other, a need for space, a chance to breathe, as life slowly returns to normal and your work, leisure activities or college commitments assume importance again. That is when you might discover that you are behnd in your project, or in the book you are desperate to write! He could also find out that his finances are in trouble due to wining and dining you so much, or that he has missed important sporting matches and the antics of his football heroes, things he suppressed in the besotment stage that you didnt even know mattered to him. But that is only the beginning as his real personality emerges. Reality rapidly sets in, but a new kind which requires some understanding, acceptance and commitment from both parties. Your partner is now an extra person, perhaps with children in the picture. From where youre sitting, that means a whole new perspective, and perhaps a daunting one. How you cope with this new situation will dictate everything else in your life. Faults, Problems and Raw Emotions With disillusion setting in, you suddenly see your partner as human. That romanticised notion, and the specialised vision youve had until now, crumbles away to reveal a real being, with real faults, real pain, real problems and real emotions. But often that is not what you are quite ready for. That reminds you too much of the real world and brings new anxieties. At such a time it is very easy to get on each others nerves, which is an essential part of the familiarisation process, nothing special or unusual, and no one is exempt from it either. But how we cope individually depends upon our expectation, our level of confidence and personal aspirations - the invisible forces wwe bring with us. As someone once said, On the other side of disillusionment comes the real marriage. This stage of remorse and regret builds the foundation upon which the couple can live out their chosen relationship, but first comes a lot of nit-picking and fault-finding as many expectations are dashed. One reason for this encroaching anxiety is that P.E.A production of Stage 2, which helped you to become so loving, begins to decline. As we regarded the other person as the source of our good feelings, so we now blame her when we dont feel as good! Things you once liked about your partner now become sources of frustration and hurt feelings. It sometimes feels like love is dying. You begin thinking, or even saying, things like: Is this what the rest of my life is going to be like? while becoming apprehensive and adversarial instead of trusting and cooperative. Sometimes it feels as if you are walking on eggshells because little molehills so easily turn into big mountains. Frequently, one or both of you will engage in blame, criticism, sarcasm and put-downs as anger and resentment build up. The key words here are He used to… or She used to… which indicates something of value is no longer there and is sorely missed. Moreover, even though you dream of intimacy and closeness in a relationship, once you actually have it, it can start to rub a little and small irritations add up to large ones. There is now a wonder at the loss of privacy and a yearning for it, but privacy is always the first thing to go once you move in together or formally tie the knot. Green Tea: Help Or Hype?

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

By Laura Turner Theres been lots of health-hype lately surrounding the benefits of green tea. Im certain youve heard it, too. Have you ever wondered: Is it really worth my while to drink tea of the green variety? Stick around and decide for yourself. First: The Claims: A rich source of anti-oxidants: What are anti-oxidants? Anti-oxidants neutralize free radicals or unstable molecules in the body that can eventually become unfriendly and wreak havoc on the cells. Free radical damage can cause everything from sun damage to hardening of the arteries. Green tea will help you bulk up on the anti-oxidant warriors that help to both lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease by controlling blood pressure. Cancer prevention: Green tea has been shown to lower rates of cancer in Asian populations. The cancers studied and which have been recorded include: bladder, colon, esophagus, pancreas, rectal and stomach. New evidence suggests green tea may also help prevent prostate cancer, as well. Help with arthritis: Studies also suggest there is possible anti-inflammatory and arthritis preventing effects in green tea although, Ill admit, solid scientific evidence was difficult to come by. By simple suggestion, Ill give green tea an A for effort in the arthritis category. Liver protection: Green tea has been proven to protect liver cells by stimulating the immune system. Green tea protects the liver by warding off toxins such as alcohol and cigarette smoke. Teeth protection: Green tea has been thought to promote oral health (although scientific proof was difficult to come by here, too). Green tea is supposed to work against bacteria, protecting teeth from cavities. Weight loss: Heres another benefit that will raise many an eyebrow. Several sources I found claimed that green tea may actually help to stimulate weight loss. Yes! Green tea contains polyphenols (molecule compounds) that actually help the body to burn weight and regulate both blood sugar and insulin levels. The Bad News Whats the bad news? The only negative side effect Ive found is the simple recorded cases of insomnia due to naturally occurring caffeine in green tea. It looks like theres only 30-60mg in 6-8 ounces of tea, however. That’s less than half the caffeine content of coffee which weighs in at 90 mg. per 8 ounce cup. Other FAQs About Green Tea: How much green tea is enough to reap the benefits? No one seems to be too sure about the answer to this question, either. Let’s be realistic most people could easily drink 3-4 cups of green tea daily. This is a good round number and one that I came up with based on its frequency in the research studied. A suggestion: why not try replacing your usual cup of coffee with a clean dose of health? Where to get a good cup of tea? Check out your local grocery for my favorite: Lipton. There’s plenty of others, but I like the way Lipton aims to zip up green tea with variety. They even have a orange, passionfruit & jasmine flavor that’s de-lish! If drinking tea really isnt your thing, but you still want the benefits no problem! Green tea is now available in capsule form, too. This could be as close as your local pharmacy. Check around. In summation: In this scientists opinion, green tea is well worth your consideration. The simple speculation of benefits is enough to get excited about it. Its easy to digest, tastes good and, hey, if it helps me with my goal of wellness and illness prevention, Ill take ample tea time, any day! Advanced Spring Cleaning

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

By Tracy Togliatti There are a million articles, books and courses that you can find about spring cleaning, clearing the clutter, organizing, and the art of Feng Shui. You can even hire a consultant to come into your home and do these things for you. This article is going to go a step beyond that. You will be able to rejuvenate your home in areas where Lysol, a carpet cleaner, and organizational systems fail to go! Im going to assume that you all ready know the basics of cleaning, removing whatever you dont need or arent emotionally attached to, and how to keep your belongings organized. Im also going to assume that you understand that a clean and healthy environment improves your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. I dont believe you would be reading this article if you havent all ready been working hard to create a clean and healthy environment for yourself and your family. What we really want to focus on with this article is that not so fresh feeling that occasionally lingers even after youve cleaned, organized, and simplified down to the bare bones. There are a variety of reasons why this might happen. Maybe the room doesnt have enough windows, or other natural resources to refresh itself in a natural way. Or, it could have lingering energy from bad memories. Those energies need a little more work to get rid of so you can fill the room with the warmth and comfort you want to feel in there instead. The following tools will help you with your efforts. If the room you are struggling with doesnt have enough windows to provide plenty of natural lighting, it may have a lingering stale feeling to it. There are a couple of things you can do to correct this. One is to buy light bulbs that have a natural light to them. They are available at most places you buy regular bulbs at. This will give the room the feeling that sunshine is pouring in. Another good idea is to burn candles. Even unscented ones are perfect in giving the room a feeling of warmth and comfort that the sun would normally offer. Speaking of candles, scented candles are a wonderful source of aromatherapy and can help freshen a room while your offering the additional light. Try to stick with one scent at a time though so the room doesnt become overwhelming. The best scents for a room lacking in sunlight are light or citrusy scents that will help lighten the rooms atmosphere. Mother Nature offers many types of naturally cleaning items. Bringing these items of nature indoors is the best way to keep your space refreshed. Plants are perfect for any room and continuously clean the air for you. Philodendrons, Spider plants, and Pothos were found to be the most efficient in the removal of formaldehyde. Gerbera Daisies and Chrysanthemums were found to be effective in the removal of benzene, a known carcinogen. You can check with your local greenhouse for more information about the types of plants that will work the best for you. Gemstones and crystals have energetic vibrations that interact with the atmosphere in a room and are perfect for helping to create more positive energies. You can find decorative gemstones in any shape and size to fit the scheme of your rooms dcor. You can also use smaller gemstones and put them in a decorative dish, or in planters with your plants. Clear Quartz is a favorite general stone that works well to balance energies. You might want to check with your local New Age store to see what other recommendations they may have that are more specific for your situation. Water fountains have multiple benefits in helping to keep a room fresh. The water helps hydrate the air, while the sound of a fountain running offers soothing water sounds for stress relief benefits. Water Fountains come is a broad variety of styles and sizes. You will be sure to find one that will match the dcor of the room perfectly. Stubborn, negative energies call for more extensive measures to remove them. The easiest thing to do to completely refresh the energy in a room is to burn some Sage; it has cleansing properties in it that will replace negative energies with fresh energetic elements. There are Sage candles, or even dried Sage in a fireproof container will work beautifully. While you are doing this, meditate about positive feelings and imagine them filling out into the room. Nothing is more powerful than your own intentions. One other idea Ill leave you with is to consider getting a House Blessing. Blessing ceremonies abound in every religion and spiritual discipline. You can have someone come into your home for a House Blessing when no one is there, or you can be involved and make it a very special event for your family to be involved with. I hope these ideas help you in your efforts of creating a heaven on earth for you and your family. If you would like more suggestions, or would like specific ideas for your particular circumstances, I would be more than happy to help you further.Remember, Theres no place like home!
